5 ways to bring more light into your home

Nothing will boost your mood or your home value more than bringing in more natural light into your home. This post is all about bringing in more sunshine so you have less cloudy days.

Windows

This may seem obvious but windows are a great way to bring in the light! If your current windows just aren’t working for you, consider replacing them, or even adding more windows to your home. Take the time to observe the way the sun moves around your house and map out your new window placement so that you have sunshine all day long. The best rooms to start with are kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, and home offices because they are all high traffic rooms that could use an extra dose of natural light.

Skylights

Skylights are the perfect way to feel the warmth of the sun indoors. Skylights allow for more privacy than windows because no one passing by is going to be able to glance inside, and they look stunning with vaulted ceilings. Another advantage with skylights is that they provide overhead lighting, which means that you will use less electricity during daylight hours.

Mirrors

If windows and skylights are a little out of your budget, mirrors are a great way to reflect the light that is already in your home. If your house is a little on the snug side, think about adding some floor to ceiling mirrors or even cover entire walls with mirrors to increase natural light and to give the allusion of more space.

Paint colors

Basements can be pretty drab and dreary places to hang out, especially if they don’t have any above ground windows. The best paint colors for basements are cheery yellows, ladybug reds, and crisp blues. Don’t make the mistake of putting light colors or pastels in rooms with little light, these can actually make a room look darker and the walls may appear dirty. Dark colors in dark rooms are a recipe for depression; dark hues should only be used in homes with an abundance of natural lighting. So what colors should be used to brighten dark rooms in the rest of your home? As a general rule the medium tones are the best fit, these are the colors that fall right in the middle of color strips. Medium tones fit the Goldilocks rule: not too dark not too light, but just right!

Sunrooms

No other home addition will bring in more light than a sunroom. Sunrooms allow you to take advantage of the sun year round and can provide a great place for entertaining guests with the charm of the outdoors while still staying inside. Adding a sunroom can greatly enhance the look and curb appeal of your home.  When a sunroom is constructed to fit well with the style and design of the entire structure it can add a touch of luxury and elegance that a simple home addition cannot.
