Advice for Getting the Most Out of Your Multiuse Rooms

Most homeowners have a room of their house that is used for everything and also nothing at the same time. Some may call these the “room of shame” or the dumping ground/storage area for the rest of the home. When was the last time you were satisfied with the way that room functioned? We have some tips to transform these rooms into usable spaces.

De-clutter & Organize

First things first, you need to get rid of everything that is un-necessary and organize the things that you want to keep. Start by making piles of “trash”, “keep”, “donate”, and “relocate” (as in move to another room) this will help you get a visual of how the room will function after it’s been cleaned out. Once you have narrowed down the things you want to keep in the room, start organizing them in a way that will maximize function and accessibility. Clear containers make for the best storage solutions because you can clearly see where everything is without having to go on a scavenger hunt every time you need something.

Determine a better use for the room

Instead of having a room that serves as a catch all storage space, consider transforming the room into a guest bedroom, home office, or hobby area. Chances are you will be falling in love with a room that you were once afraid to enter. If the room is large enough, you may want to give the room dual purpose and make it a guest bedroom/home office or some other combination. You don’t need to draw a line down the middle of the room to incorporate both uses. By making smart furniture and layout decisions the room will easily accommodate both functions.

Plan for personality

Even if your newly organized home office is serving a dual purpose, you should still make a wholehearted attempt to let your personality shine through. After all, your away-from-home office probably sports all the neutral coloring and boring furniture you can handle. Select artwork or accessories that mirror your interests but that guests will enjoy. Don’t be afraid to play around with color, either. Consult a few design sites or television shows to learn how to cheaply and effectively select paint or décor that will complement your guest and office furniture. By mixing and matching neutral and vibrant colors, you can easily create a space that anyone will enjoy spending time in.

Keep it clean

The dual-purpose home office/guest room is frighteningly easy to re-clutter because it gets so much use. To keep it functional, clean and organized, consider hiring a cleaning service for weekly, monthly or quarterly care, depending on what you need. If professional help isn’t for you, commit to a cleaning and organizing schedule broken down to weekly, monthly and biannual chores. Don’t forget to sanitize surfaces that germs really love, like keyboards and telephones.

We hope this post will inspire you to make the most out of your multi-purpose rooms in your home! We wish you the best on your journey to a more organized and better functioning home.
